About Michael Coleman

Michael Coleman began his study of the martial arts in early childhood (1972). He trained under several experienced Budo teachers, but his true martial arts apprenticeship didn't begin until he met Grand Master Shoto Tanemura in 1987. Tanemura Sensei first came to teach in Milwaukee in 1989. Since then, the Grand Master has held a Tai Kai there every year. Michael trains with Tanemura Soke for at least one month per year (either in the US or in Japan). In addition, Mr. Coleman teaches up to six classes a day, six days a week, and has done so since the dojo was made an official Genbukan training center in 1988.

Michael Coleman's Japanese title is Kyoshi. He has earned a Rokudan (sixth degree black belt) in both Genbukan Ninpo and in KJJR Jujutsu. He has also passed a special sword test, which is only given to those who have mastered the physical techniques and are prepared to face the mental challenges of the art. He has taught in sixteen American states as well as internationally, including Italy, Spain and Canada. Students have made the trek to Wisconsin to train with Coleman sensei from many parts of North America, South America, and Europe.

Shibu-cho (Regional Director) is Mr. Coleman's other title, and as such he is responsible to bring Tanemura Sensei, as well as his Shihan (highest master) level students from Japan each year. In addition, and as part of his on-going duties to support any Genbukan or KJJR dojo or students who would like his help, he is conducting seasonal seminars of his own.

Coleman Kyoshi encourages his students to achieve and uphold the main precepts of the of the true warrior heart:
Compassion

Sincerity

Calmness in the face of Adversity

Dedication to Self-improvement
